We, the growers of the state of California, find ourselves in an extremely difficult position. SGMA has brought new challenges and responsibilities to growers in many parts of California. As we have all seen, there is a balance that must be reached between farmers, urban water users, and the environment. The State Water Resources Control Board, appointed by Governor Newsom, is charged with enforcing SGMA for those groundwater basins not approved by the Department of Water Resources. Because of this, it is in our best interest to unite and represent the San Joaquin Valley with one voice.
The Water Blueprint is uniquely positioned to lead a united group of stakeholders to work towards successful implementation of SGMA and seek support for projects that will help farmers adjust to the changing availability of groundwater when surface supplies are reduced or unavailable.
Many stakeholders have never heard of the Blueprint or understand what it does. This must change as there is no time to waste. At this moment, the State Board is conducting “workshops” around the Valley. Educating stakeholders is a key component to help the agricultural community engage in that process and make it meaningful for the State Board members as they contemplate how to address sustainable groundwater use in the San Joaquin Valley. It is important to provide a forum where growers, and other stakeholders can engage and bring discussions out of the coffee shop to help inform discussions with the State. Whether in a coffee shop, on the back of the tailgate, or at industry meetings, those in the agricultural community do engage actively. We need to take this “common sense” communication to the public arena.
Please visit the Blueprint website, www.waterblueprintca.com, and begin to engage in the process. Begin to engage with your local irrigation districts as well to find out what they are doing as they are your local representatives. In addition, please talk to your friends and other farmers and get them to engage.
It will be the responsibility of the Blueprint to speak with a unified voice for growers and residents of the San Joaquin Valley. The Blueprint has leaders from all areas of the Valley who are knowledgeable about water issues and are dedicated to helping solve some of our most challenging water supply issues.
